Hot News, May, 2012

Cookout May 19th

Charlie and Jamie are having a grilled briskut party on Saturday, May 19th at their place which is located at, 7440 Hatteras Dr. Sea Pines West, Hudson.
They’re located on the West side of Sea Pines off the Dixie Hwy.
Chef Dave is doing the Cooking, so you know it’s going to be deeeelish!
The big feed starts at 4PM.We are going to draw the winner of the Raffle at the Party. Please have all your tickets turned in by then.
Bring your own drinks and a side dish. RSVP to Jamie 727-857-6357 or Dave Chambers 727-808-1976 Don’t forget to bring a chair!

Kids tournament June 9th

The Kids Tournament will be on Saturday, June 9th at Sims Park, New Port Richey on the river just off of Bank St. by the Pavilion on the East side of 19 and North of the small bridge in town.
I need to know how many kids will be fishing. Call me to register by Wednesday, May 16th, we have to know how many gifts to buy!
Remember, your dues must be paid up to date to enter a kid in the tournament.

Emil 727-819-8696

Members Tournament May 5th

Jamie Smith took home $100.00 for a trout weighing in at 1.7 lbs. on Saturday.
Emil came in second with a Mackerel at 1.5 lbs.
Fishing wasn’t the best on Saturday, lots of algae in the water that was collecting on the bait and lines. Miriam pulled in a nice keeper sea bass, and every time we stopped at a different spot, Miriam caught the first fish. Mikee Wilkes and Dave Chambers had assorted fish. Charlie Smith caught a shark, but couldn’t enter it. Sorry Charlie. Andy Hemple had to work, Where are you when we need you Andy? LOL. Eric Sandvic and his grandson didn’t weigh anything in, so I guess they just went home, we didn’t see them at the weigh-in at Mikee’s. It was a beautiful day out on the reef and everyone had a great time. I wish more members participated. It was great fun.
Here’s Jamie with her award winning $100.00 Trout!

Membership bans smoking at meetings!

Members unanimously voted to ban smoking at the meetings!
At the May 1st meeting a vote was taken and everyone agreed to not smoke during the meetings. We don’t need to loose members due to smoking. We tried to adjust seating to accomodate smokers and it didn’t work out, so we voted and everyone agreed that it was best to smoke outside. We can’t stop Stormies customers from smoking at the bar but we can keep a smoke it free in the meeting area. This should make smoke sensitive members more comfortable.

  Raffle Tickets

We need to get busy selling raffle tickets, we’re about 150 short so far, so if you need tickets, contact Emil or Jamie and see if we can make a success of this Raffle. We took a beating on what we spent on the May tournament and the Raffle would help offset the money we spent. Get out there and sell, sell, sell!

Stormies Too

Members Tournament April 28th

Buck Hartman has something to brag about.

Buck, Mikee Wilkes, Dave Chambers, Miriam and Emil went about 8 miles out on Mikee’s boat and found some pretty big sea bass and along with them a passel of sharks. Altogether, we caught 7 sharks, all were close to 3 feet long. The sea bass were small but mixed in with them were some nice size keepers.
Along with a sand shark that was very close to 4 feet long, Buck hooked the largest ladyfish we’ve ever seen. This fat pig was about 5 lbs. Everyone caught plenty of fish but o’l Buck was the clear winner.

Charlie Smith, Erik Andersen and Frank Nardi found some small fish with Charlie’s boat, when they went north toward Arapeka but nothing to brag about.
At about 4Pm we gathered at Erik’s place and had some good chow and conversation. We wish that more members would have participated and on May 5th you’ll have your chance not only to brag, but to take home $100.00 as well. We’ll be talking more about this at the meeting on Tuesday.
See you then,
Emil

The Tournament For May 16,19 & 20th is Canceled!
Poor Sponsor Participation is The Reason!
Sad news Gang. I’m afraid its just a matter of poor economic conditions, that’s all. We took a good look at the few sponsors we had and I’ve only got one call from someone who wanted to enter. We had a meeting on Wednesday April 18th attending were, former Club President Henry Fortier, former Treasurer, Frank Nardi, Secretary, Paula Ceaser, Sgt at Arms, Eric Anderson, former Secretary Dave Chambers and your President, Emil, also Miriam Tuch, our club Photographer.
Anyone who wanted to attend was invited, (refer to email).
We looked at all possible scenarios and we would have lost at least $1500.00 or more of the club’s money. We just couldn’t justify taking that kind of hit for a tournament. We all agreed that even if we lost a couple of hundred dollars, we would have had the event, but to loose that much was not prudent. Ideally, we look to make some money on our tournaments so we can donate to something in the community, but it wasn’t to be this year. This is the first time in many years we have cancelled our tournament but it had to be done. Sorry folks, we did our best. We’ll be talking more about this at the May meeting on May 1st, 7:00 PM at Stormie’s Too.Guest speaker, Mace, From Coastal Conservation Assoc. He’ll be with us for this meeting.
The Members Tournament for this Saturday, April 21st is also cancelled due to expected storms. The rain date is Saturday, April 28th. Please let Emil know if you intend to participate.
Joe Cooper is back in the hospital. He has a screw loose!
Sue says that when he broke his leg and they operated, a screw in his leg came loose, so he’s going to have that fixed and on to rehab. Well, we all like Joe and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Hi, Oh Sons and Daughters of the Salt and Sea,

Like that opening? LOL

It has been brought to my attention that there’s a big problem with smoking at the meetings.

I understand that some of you are allergic or you just don’t enjoy the smell of one of nature’s finest products. A product that has been responsible for the economic stability of the south as well as the funding and founding of many large universities here in the south, and that legal product is tobacco.

OK, now that that’s been said, tongue in cheek of course, we don’t want anyone to be uncomfortable at our meetings.

One of issues I have to deal with on this subject, is that the room we meet in is a smoking area for Stormies customers, so, smoking is permitted there. The other issue is that some members can’t stand the smell of tobacco smoke, which I understand. Maybe this wasn’t brought to my attention because you felt that because I’m a smoker, I may not be sympathetic with you- well, that’s not true, I am. Miriam doesn’t smoke and I have to be considerate to her at home or she’ll throw me out, and I’m sure we don’t want to see our President homeless, do we, so I do understand.

This is what I plan to try at the next meeting. I’m going to ask any NON-SMOKERS to sit at the south end of the room, that’s the area to the right coming in the back door. This way any customers or members can smoke at the end of the room toward the bar area and if any of Stormies customers come in and want to sit at the bar and smoke, all the smokers will be at that end of the room.

As I said, I’m going to give this a try and see how it works. I’m also going to ask Steve, (owner of Stormies) to crack one of the vynil window covers to allow smoke to be drawn out toward the bar end of the room away from the smoke sensitive folks.

But here’s the thing. No one has made an official complaint to me about the smoke. If I don’t know about a problem, I can’t do much about it. You have to let me know, not just in passing, but get my attention and let me know how important an issue is to you. You can always talk about things like this during the new business portion of the meeting too. I’m kind of dissapointed that it hasn’t been brought to my attention sooner.

I know its very hard for me to talk to some of you at the meetings because it gets pretty hectic for me on meeting nights. I honestly wish I had time to talk to everyone at the meetings but it never seems to work out for me.

You can also email me and let me know your concerns regarding any issue that you feel is important to you and the club.

I want everyone to feel comfortable at our meetings and if I’m forced to, I may have to suspend smoking during the meetings. I want to accommodate everyone but I’m not going to punish one group to appese the other. I think we can solve this problem as a club and make everyone feel at home at the meetings.

Please email me if you have any suggestions or comments about this subject or anything else that’s on your mind.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 6th. 7PM. Be there or be square! LOL

Your President,

Emil

                                    Sad News

It seems about this time every year I have to
report sad news of a brother member passing.
Many of you knew Chip Davis, he owned Leisure
Beach, T-Shirts, Hats and Embroidery, on RT. 19,
next to Zorro Insurance.
Chip was born in Charlotte NC and moved her
in 2004. He was 51 years young.
Chip had been having heart problems for quite
some time. He told me not too long ago that his
heart was only working at about 30%, this is why
he didn’t make many meetings in the past few
years. Chip was so tired after work, he just wanted
to go home and rest after work.
Chip was a true Southern Gentleman. He always
took time to carefully design our tournament
shirts and hats. We couldn’t give he and his
wife Brenda much notice before the tournaments
because of getting sponsors in at the last minute
but Chip and Brenda would work all night to have
them ready for us come tournament day.
I’ll miss Chip, as I know many of the members
who knew him will.
We all extend our deepest sympathy to his wife
Brenda, their children and grandchildren, and his
to Chip’s mother and brother.
God Bless you Chip.
We wish Chip warm sunny days, calm seas and
lots of fish to catch on the other side.
